They say that time is one’s greatest commodity. So, if you have free time on your hands, what better way to spend it than to give back to a community that you love. Not only will your community benefit, but countless studies have shown that volunteering for a cause that is meaningful to you will bring you joy and fulfillment as well. There are so many causes in any given community that you can volunteer for. Start by finding a cause that you care about or thinking of a unique skill that you have that might benefit those in need. Here are a few volunteer ideas to get you started.
Love animals? Consider volunteering at a local pet shelter or zoo. These organizations are often underfunded and can use hands to help feed, bath, or even just play with the animals.
If you are a people person, volunteering at a local homeless shelter or hospital is a great option. Individuals in these facilities are often in difficult situations and would just love a person to talk to.
If you care about the environment, consider volunteering for a park cleanup, educating visitors at a local wildlife park, or promoting climate change initiatives.
Lastly, if you have a unique skill you might be able to fill an underserved need in your community. If you’re handy you can work with Habitat for Humanity. If you are crafty you can knit or crochet blankets for hospitals or elder care facilities. Do you have a green thumb? If so you can volunteer to work in a community garden, or even start your own community garden.
No matter how you decide to give back, the important thing is that you take the first step, and find the need in your community. Your fellow community members will be better off for your time and in the end, giving back will have priceless benefits for you as well.
